From its humble beginnings as a mail order service, KINGS Comics opened its first store in 1986 in a below-street level location in Elizabeth Street, Sydney. KINGS offered a higher level of service and selection of product to customers unseen at that time in Sydney and quickly rose to being the industry leader. KINGS was the first comic book store in Australia to develop a specifically designed computerised Standing Order and stock system. KINGS was also at the forefront of the trading card boom in the late 80s, being at one time the major distributor of American and Australian sports cards in the country.
KINGS’ range of new release comics is still by far the most comprehensive in Australia . Our stock includes many different genres - super-hero, manga, crime, fantasy and science fiction as well as a wide selection of independent and alternative titles. KINGS also carries a vast selection of trade paperbacks and graphic novels for all tastes. Trade paperback collections of comic books are a great way to introduce yourself to the world of graphic illustration!
KINGS continues to evolve to meet it’s customers tastes and is continually adding more pop culture products and toys to their mix of stock which appeal to both the young and the die-hard collector. KINGS also carries a wide range of comic book, animation media and film magazines, for both fans and industry professionals.
Having had stores in just about every compass point in Sydney , KINGS is now concentrating on its stunning new Sydney - 310 Pitt Street location having opened in September 2003, after 17 years in Elizabeth Street . This new store has allowed KINGS to retail comics and merchandise to a whole new audience - further increasing the awareness of the comic book industry. KINGS’ new store features loads of toys, action figures, statues and rare collectibles along with a huge range of the hottest TPBs and graphic novels on offer!
KINGS has a very efficient MAIL ORDER and REORDER services which provide collectors with a speedy way to pick up the most recent and hard to find titles. A further bonus is the KINGS Premier Club, which offers customers a range of services and discounts which help in their collecting.
KINGS is very proud to say it was awarded with the 1996 International Will Eisner “Spirit of Comics” Retailer Award at the ComicCon International, San Diego. This prestigious award recognises excellence in comic book retailing and service, as well as commitment to the promotion of comic books, which KINGS continues to follow through events such as store signings, convention planning and media commentary.
Throughout the years KINGS has had many well known local and international creators come to their stores to meet Australian fans as well as participating in signings. These have included Neil Gaiman, Kurt Busiek, John Cassaday, John Delancy and Mark Bagley.
As a way of increasing awareness of comics and collectibles to the general public, KINGS created OZCON - Australia ’s Premier Comic Book Convention. From 1992 to 1998, OZCON was the main focus for creators of the Australian comics industry to come together to promote their home grown titles. Over the years OZCON brought to Australian shores some of the most popular comic book creators of the past and present. These have included Chris Bachalo, Sy Barry, Chris Claremont, Eddie Campbell, Travis Charest, Jamie Delano, Garth Ennis, Mike Grell, Phil Jimenez, Dan Jurgens, Joe Kelly, Cam Kennedy, Dale Keown, Jim Lee, Aaron Lopresti, Denny O’Neill, Whilce Portacio, John Romita Sr, Stephen Seagle, Marc Silvestri, Dave Sim, Keith Parkinson and Mark Waid.
